we're still in shock in connecticut. all of us who know this little town, as america has come to know it, 27-28,000 people. beautiful town. hard-working people who worked their way to get there. tight families. very religious. very much involved in the life of the community. peaceful. and out of nowhere -- this tragically is the point in the morning comes this one deranged individual with guns and slaughters 26 innocents, break our hearts, with 20 of those being young children. i'm sure everybody now feels as if they are part of the family of those who were killed. you look at the faces of those children, pure, innocent, and i think of the words that one of the clergy at the interfaith service the other night. they're angels and they're really with the angels in heaven now. the work, the response of the first responders, and the trauma that they have gone through to face what they had to face, and the carnage that they witnessed the, and yet you talk to some of them and they're guilty that they didn't get there earlier a

i was on the floor earlier this week paying tribute to the lost lives in connecticut and two police officers killed in the line of duty in topeka, kansas, this week and the death of our colleague; certainly serious issues we face. now waiting the house to pass legislation in regard to the cliff. this is perhaps a lighter subject. i want to pay tribute to something that's such a great tradition in our state of kansas and really across the country. football is something that is important to communities across my state. on friday nights each fall of each year thousands of americans, they gather at their local high school football fields to cheer on their favorite teams. this tradition has stood strong for decades on the kansas prairie, but it's especially true in a little town not too far from my hometown, in the town of smith center. there are few, if any, high school football fans in our state who are unaware of smith center's reputation. coach roger barda and his red men football team have won more than 320 games and eight state championships, five in a row. they are even known here in washi

you know, one week ago we saw this terrible, horrific shooting in connecticut. while the nation mourned what happened there, we mourned here in the senate because of the passing of senator inouye, and yet the work of senator inouye went on through the urgent supplemental, and i'd like to thank the gentleman from new york for helping with the management of this bill, as well as the senator from vermont, who also did. and i also want to pay -- and senator landrieu, who, as the chair of the homeland security, have all done good jobs. but we senators know that we're only as good as our staff. and as the inouye era goes through its transition, i would like to thank the inouye staff. first of all, for everything they've done on this bill. i would like to thank the inouye staff for all they did in staffing truly one of the great icons in the united states senate. now, don't think the inouye staff is going to go away under barbara mikulski. but i want to publicly thank all of them in behalf of all of you, that they held their own emotions in control so we could move for
